Urine in
Homeopathy
It is quite interesting to note that in his legendary book entitled
“Dictionary of Materia Media (in 3 volumes) Dr. John H. Clarke in
his 3rd Volume has mentioned about URINE under the heading ‘URINUM’.
This term ‘URINUM’ is a synonym of ‘URINE’.
Instead of
pruning his remarks, along with other author’s opinions we quote
hereunder-relevant excerpts their form.
1. Under UREA Allen gives some symptoms
observed on a man, who, for a skin affliction drank in the morning,
the Urine had passed the night before. The symptoms were severe.
Consisting of general dropsy scanty Urine and excessive weakness.
These symptoms I have arranged under ‘URINUM’.
2. Urine therapy is practically as old as man himself.
3. The Chinese treat wounds by sprinkling Urine on them and the
custom is wide spread in the Far East. Taken internally it is
believed to stimulate the circulation and is Valued as an active
oxytocic.
4. The parturient (A women about to give
birth to a child) woman drinks the Urine of male child four to five
years old and the part voided in the middle. The child Urinates into
three vessel, the woman drinking the contents of the second.
Dr. Clarke
quotes, based on the findings of Dr. Cooper, a few cases which, were
administered Urine to drink to dispel various diseases as under.
1. A youth for crops of boils, which nothing could cure was
recommended to drink every morning for Three mornings a cupful of
his own Urine. Then after an intermission of Three days to resume
and so on till cured. He was cured on the ninth day.
2. “Black heads” “Cured in exactly the same (manner) way. This
patient drank it when fresh.
3. “Chronic Bronchitis much relieved.”
4. “Ague” (Fever)
5. “Urticaria”
6. “For Thrust it is a custom in Yorkshire to rub the baby’s tongue
with its own napkin.”
7. “For Pimples & blotches the Negroes of Barbados drink Their Urine
and apply it locally.”
8. “For ophthalmic in children it is a custom in Switzerland to
bathe the eyes in children’s own Urine,”
9. “A man suffered very much from weak and inflamed eyes until he
adopted this plan which after a time cured him”.
10. “A celebrated breeder of cattle and horses succeeded in getting
him animal’s skin into an astonishing condition of fineness, by
giving them about a teaspoonful of old human urine with early meal.”
11. “Use of Urine has been used a remedy for scurvy (S. Mills
Fowler) in the civil war.
12. In another incident Dr. Clarke elaborates use of Urine, when
hundreds of starving prisoners were dying of scurvy. A soldier could
not extend contract move his thighs and could walk only on his
elbows and rump. There was excruciating pain.
“Within the stockade were growing two large turpentine trees. Of the
pitch from these trees the patients would take enough to make their
Urine clear and white as crystal.” The Urine voided was allowed to
stand till it began to sour, which took twelve to twenty four hours.
The patients then took a good swallow four or five times a day. They
felt the good effect of every dose. The treatment cured Mr.…. And
all his companions to fortune who adopted it.”
13. These cures are to some extent analogous with nosode cures as
the patients drink their own urine, but uranium, urea, uric acid are
also medicines on their own account and rank with sarcodes. The
symptoms of uremia may be taken as a pathogenesis of URINUM for the
sake of attenuations. UREA cured renal dropsy and URINUM produced
it. The skin action or URINUM is remarkable in connection with its
use in the dressing of leather, no substitute having been found for
it in this.
The world ‘Urine’ owes its origin to ‘UREA’ which is considered to
be a chief constituent of ‘Urine’ hence the medicines like Uranium
and Urea. Dr. Boesricke also supports Dr. Clarke’s observations on
‘URINUM’ for treatment of Acne, Boils, Scurvy, dropsy etc. ‘URINUM’
is given in dilutions.
Urine in
Ayurveda
According to Sushrut “Human Urine is an antidote to poisons” and in
Yoga Ratnakar it has been succinctly mentioned that Urine of human
being controls and calms down cough. It is destroyer of worms,
capable of cleansing the intestines controlling biles in the blood.
Though it tastes sharp, yet it dispels laziness of body and also
antidotes ill effect of poisons and poisonous substances.
Cow is a scared animal for the Hindus. Its milk is akin to a
mother’s milk for feeding a baby, rather it is a brilliant
substitute and easily digestible, light, in nature, low in fats,
hence does not disturb. Cow dung dispels and kills many types of
bacteria and germs. It is therefore used to clean the kitchen, and
to cook food. Cow’s Urine has unquestionable medicinal values. In
olden times people used to accompany their cows for grazing in open
green fields and they used to drink cow’s urine (first urine in the
morning). Cow’s Urine was one of the essential constituents of panch
gavya or commonly Known as charnamrita.
Medicinal and chemical values of Urine was not unknown to Ayurveda
and there are certain medicines which are grinded in Urine (in cow’s
Urine) or its Urine is used in conjunction with other ingredients or
alone. In olden time Urine was put in the ear (after making it
slightly warm) to subside ear pain in infants. When nothing was
available to eat, one could take one’s own urine to satiate his
hunger-may be an emergency device, Out of all the animal’s Urine
Cow’s urine has religious, medicinal, germicidal and cleansing
properties. Merely looking at the human Urine, an astute Vaidya
could tell the diseases of an ailing person.
Urine in
Allopathy
There is hardly any evidence to prove use of human or animal urine
for curative and medicinal purpose in allopathic treatment. Thought
it has become redundant now, a few years ago doctors often used
‘auto blood’ therapy for certain diseases, when patient’s
intravenous blood was syringed out and again injected to same
patient into glutei muscles. Culture & sensitivity tests on Urine,
sputum, use of Vaccines prepared from various human and/or animal
virus are sufficient examples to prove that allopathy did use human
or animal excretions in one form or the other. It is a common
practice to apply saliva on the bleeding site or to stop bleeding
(minor cuts only). Homeopathic Nosodes are an answer to allopathic
Vaccines – The former is taken orally whereas the latter is
inoculated/injected.
Buddhist
Tradition and Use of Urine
Lord Buddha’s teachings also mentioned use of Urine if someone was
bitten by a snake because Urine has the quality to ward off
poisonous ill effects-this he had advised in Buddhist treatise named
‘Mahbagga’ Great Buddhist sage, Milarepa, admitted that when he was
feeling thirsty he consumed (drink) blue and pure water, whereas on
other occasions he relied upon his own secretions, drank flow from
fountain of compassion and finally he further opines that he very
often sipped nectar of goddesses which was enchanting.
To china, Mongolia and Tibet’s Buddhist priests (monks & saints)
drinking of Urine was not an alien Therapy. They knew well and
frequently practiced the art of Urine Therapy to get rid of many
diseases—nay stay healthy and fit. By using urines the lamas not
only attained longer span of life, (say over 150 years or so) but
also enjoyed a disease free span of life. Sir Morris Wilson, who
scaled the Mount Everest, learnt the art and use of Urine Therapy
from the lamas who accompanied him to the summit. He was fully
convinced with healing and life saving qualities of Urine, hence
throughout his expedition, he drank and massaged Urine on his skin
(as practiced and advocated by lamas) and by doing so he was
fortified with vigor and energy to with stand ordeals and other
problems while and after trekking.
The lamas when they fell ill, drank the
Urine of anyone of the superior or elevated lamas because they
thought that the higher person, the cleaner and purer his urine
would be. The lamas normally do not drink their own urine whether
they are diseased or not. This is an instance of unswerving and
abiding faith in the ‘higher ones’ because purity of bodily
secretions, it is believed, was closely associated with purity of
mind. The unquestioned qualities of pure mind, thought, life
thinking, meditation and ‘Vipasana’ are capable of normalizing
blood, reducing tension and thus providing fresh and purified blood
to all body organs. It is said that your mind and quality of food
(say Satvik Food) have inter – related effects. If the food is
Nontoxic and cereal-free, your mind will never have any impure
thoughts; when the mind is pure, all the excretions of body, food,
meditation when combine together, cause secretion of Nectar, which
is pure & clean urine free from any obnoxious and pungent odors.
Prescriptions pertaining to use of Urine
in mental and physical symptoms, including ailments caused by
spirits and devilish demons are given in “GYU-ZHI” – an authentic
and important book in medical literature of Tibet. Tibetan medicine
is influenced by Ayurveda, when it is mentioned, “Urine was
extensively used in Ayurveda medication especially for the mentally
ill.” Terry Clifford’s book “ Tibetan Buddhist Medicine and
Psychiatry” makes startling and useful revelations of multiple uses
of Urine for oral Land local applications.
JAINISM AND
URINE THERAPY
Though Buddhism goes far ahead in eulogizing effects of Ahimsa
(Non-Violence) Jainism goes still farter and in a more subtle way in
propounding this theory. Jainism acknowledges and recommends use of
Urine Therapy for aspirants in “Vyavahar Sutra” written by Acharya
Bhadrabahu, as follows
